THE COMMON PROBLEM IN SEWER PUMP STATIONS IN HIGH LOAD APPLICATIONS

All Purpose Pumps provided a tailored pump station solution for high-solid wastewater applications, using the correct chamber size, grinder pumps, mixers, and level controls. At the Continental Hotel in Sorrento, a solids-handling mixer pump was installed to prevent toilet waste buildup and reduce the risk of pump station overflow.

A common challenge in high load applications like schools, shopping centres, hospitals, and public toilets is clogged toilets causing pits to overflow with solids. Learn how All Purpose Pumps solves this with proper chamber sizing, grinder pumps, mixers, and sewer munchers.

A common challenge in the market is figuring out what kind of specification is needed for a project. At All Purpose Pumps, we focus on the highest quality of service for our customers and hope to improve our lead times for projects continuously.

Establishments with high load applications are experiencing clogged toilets that cause pits to overflow with solids from all the toilet paper being flushed daily. This is a common problem in establishments such as:

  • Schools
  • Shopping centres
  • Public toilets
  • Major fuel service station/foodary
  • Hospitals
  • Inflow from toilets only i.e. construction sites

Our approach? We consider the following:

Chamber Size – considering chamber size in high solids loading and low water content scenarios

Pump Types – Grinder-type pumps are designed to pump wastewater with soft solids such as human waste and toilet paper. Anything abrasive such as dirt, silt or garden matter will damage the grinder mechanism.

Mixer/Agitator – A pump station mixer/agitator will operate during pump down breaking up floating solids and setting the solids into suspension enabling them to be pumped away reducing maintenance and improving reliability.

Level Transducer – Less prone to fouling than floats, which debris and paper can tangle around and obstruct.

Sewer Muncher – Where high loadings of foreign solids are expected such as in a prison, hospital, or aged care facility a muncher is to be installed within a separate pit upstream of the sewer pump station.

EXAMPLE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF MIXERS:

Project: Continental Hotel, Sorrento

Issue: A pump station at a luxurious bar and restaurant in Sorrento on the south coast of Victoria is being used to collect toilet block waste for about 20 toilets. During summer, events and weekends the high usage of the toilets would overwhelm the pump station and would almost overflow with solids. This was due to the mixer being switched off and the small chamber size (as there was minimal space for installation).

Solution: The chamber needed to be vacuumed out and the HV80.15 50mm solids handling mixer pump installed.
